The Girl Next Door

From the Book Love and Other Sports

Ron a college age young man has come home from college and mowing his parents yard. He has a bewildered look as one woman Beth Ann is angerly storming off after being rebuffed by Ron and the bounding and excited Mandy checking her mail and is excited when she sees Ron.

When Ron returns home from college, he expects a quiet summer and familiar faces. Instead, he’s pulled into the complicated lives of the two young women who grew up beside him — Beth Ann, spirited and unpredictable, and Mandy, once the little girl next door, now suddenly grown and full of surprises.

As Ron reconnects with both of them, he’s forced to confront how quickly life changes — and how the people we think we know can transform in ways we never saw coming. What begins as a simple homecoming becomes a tender, eye‑opening look at friendship, missed chances, and the bittersweet shift from adolescence into adulthood.

A gentle, heartfelt story about returning home, seeing people in a new light, and discovering that growing up doesn’t happen all at once — it happens in the moments we least expect.
